I have a question regarding the NLSY79 data set and I’m wondering whether someone on here has worked with the data and might be able to help me. This post is a bit of a shot in the dark, but any help would be appreciated.

Some of the job variables, such as hourly rate of pay, firm size, or whether the job was found through the help of a contact (Queston names: HRP, QES-FIRMSZ, QES-91CB), are only asked for up to 5 jobs of the respondent each year. So in each year information starts at job number 1. Other measures, such as tenure at the firm (EMPLOYERS_ALL_TENURE), are asked for all jobs the respondent may have held. The job numbers here, however, are not reset each year and reach into jobs numbered as 20 or higher. I am therefore not sure which job number (and information on, e.g., tenure) is to be matched with which job number for the information on firm size etc, since the job numbers for these two sets of variables differ. Has this issue come up before and do you know how to help me with this.

If no detailed information on this is available: The core of my question is basically whether job number 1 for those questions with up to 5 jobs each year (HRP, etc.) refers to the most recent (/current) job of the respondent, or the first job that they have held that year (the chronological order).

I am a PhD student from Australia in the discipline of international business. For my data collection, I intend to conduct an online survey among energy-related firms in six countries (Australia, USA, UK, India, China and Sri Lanka). For this, I need to contact managers in production, technology, R&D, and manufacturing divisions of the companies.

Based on my research model the minimum sample size is 356. Considering a low response rate (approximately 10%), I have to contact approximately three thousand firms. So far I am trying to collect this data by accessing specific firm’s websites. This is very time consuming, and in nearly 99% of cases, I could not find the specific email address I am looking for.

My question is with respect to the availability and ability to find these firms and specific contact persons contact details. Are there any websites or firms who could find the specific firms, contact persons (managers in production, etc.) and their specific email addresses?

I am trying to configure the CELL OAI-PMH Drupal Module for the Drupal literature repository of my university. Its content is supposed to be collected by a harvester, to fill a centralized database with literature from educational institutions around the world.

The content needs to be mapped to the Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS), which results in an XML file that can be accessed by the harvester. The literature objects have a field containing the abstract. This field must be mapped to the
element of MODS. More information here.

So in the settings of the OAI-PMH view I just mapped abstracts to the abstract field. This is supposed to work, but it doesn’t exactly do everything right. The problem is, that it produces multiple abstract fields, even though it should only produce one. It appears that after every comma in the abstract, a new field is being created. The output looks like this in XML.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet
consetetur sadipscing elitr

All this text should be in just one
. I have tried everything, but I don’t really know what causes the problem. And I don’t really know where to ask for help. You don’t find a lot of information about this in developer forums, since this seems to be uniquely used in academia. I don’t have any special training in literature repositories, so it’s hard for me to get behind this problem.

I have a question: I’m currently working on my PhD and I was looking for some specific data. After going through a lot of articels I found one from 2016 and one from 2017 both from the same three authors.

In this article the authors are trying to solve an empirical question and for this they create a very nice graph which shows exactly the data I was searching for. This graph is not the main subject of the article, only briefly mentioned and an interim solution to the main problem the authors are trying to solve.

Based on the article alone it is not possible to recreate the graph (because they are not using publicly available data).

Looking for a way to get the data I contacted one of the three authors via email (maybe this was a mistake). I wrote something like (my email was based on a question in this forum which I can’t find right now):

  • I was reading your article
  • who I am and what I’m doing right now
  • what I’m interested in
  • what I need and that it would be very helpful if I could get the data (again I was pointing out that I only need the data points of the graph)

This was on Monday and I still got no answer. Should I contact the other two authors of the article?

I have moved this question from the site: Psychology & Neuroscience (https://psychology.stackexchange.com/questions/19172/methods-of-access-to-payment-databases)

Commonly I have to work in base of access to payment databases, usually the university or other organizations give me access, but it is also common to find some articles that I do not have access to and since they are a minority of occasions I would consider paying (instead of waiting for some alternative method that requires a lot of time, as an interlibrary loan).

Is there still no easy way to access this type of service through a payment? I know that many publishing organizations accept a credit card (and this method is not free of difficulties since many times you have to wait for a delivery of the entire publication instead of being able to download a single document as a PDF) but I would consider better access from a network, as is the method of the universities, that is, does not exist a network that provides me, through an easy payment, (ideally would paypal) access to this articles?

Since recently I have adopted the practice of depositing and publishing raw data and background information (e.g. original images, chromatograms, R scripts, etc) regarding my published papers. I am still learning the best ways of doing this.

I am wondering what was the experience of colleagues with using the new options offered by Elsevier journals towards sharing raw data and supplementary information below:

I have just tried my first attempt with submitting a paper linking to parallel supplementary data submission to Data in Brief, and received somewhat negative reactions from my Reviewers.
(In short they did not understand how it works, and why would anyone do it.)

Has anyone here tried such new data-sharing options yet? Opinions, please?
